Photography

Photography is a year-long course that explores the world of digital photography.  Students shoot, alter and select photographs to become part of their final portfolio.  Students learn to take pictures in response to prompts carried out through studio and field experiences.  Technically, students learn how to control the functions on a digital camera for different contexts, how to manipulate photos through Adobe Photoshop CS5 and how to give and receive meaningful, constructive feedback.

Day 1

On the first day of class, our students were asked to write about their hopes / expectations of the class.  Following is an excerpted list of their responses.

  • How to use a camera
  • Learning about the properties of a great photo
  • How to take cool looking photos
  • How to create a mood with a photograph
  • Knowing what settings to use for what type(s) of photos
  • How to take pictures of moving subjects
  • Working on more subject-based stuff
  • Architectural photography
  • Taking pictures of things off-campus (field-excursions)
  • Learn how to use Adobe Photoshop to make pictures better
  • Learning the boundaries / ethics of photoshop in portraiture
