Students will explore and study the themes of personal and family life, school life, social life, and community life. The focus of the course is to help students increase their cross-cultural understanding, build a strong foundation in Chinese orthography and phonetics, and develop the ability to initiate and sustain meaningful communication with their peers. The ability to communicate is stressed in three modes—interpersonal, interpretative and presentational, and the emphasis on the performance in verbal and written communication is equally placed. Students are encouraged to discover how language works so that they can start to create with language.
