Little Sock Monkey
by Mary Oakley
June 4, 2010

Little creature
made of socks
sitting
in the dusty mist
of the bad side of the bed

under it

No friends

No one
like him

The toy soldiers have their army
The Barbie has her Ken

Why not Sock Monkey?

Can’t he have his friend?

Marbles have their colored friends
The shoes all have their pair

The Superman
has his Supergirl

Poor little stuffed creature
made of sock

Why not me?
he thought

The rustle of the blanket above him
The huge hand coming at his face

This is it
I’m being tossed
into the garbage can
he sighed

He thought he’d surely met his doom

That was the day the Little Sock Monkey
learned
every Sock Monkey
has his little girl.
