Cleaning Out the Basement
by Hayle Meyerhoff
February 24, 2010

That musty smell enters my nose
As I trudge through the open door
I want to go back to bed and doze
I’m dreading this task to the core

I rifle through a box of things
Piling memories along the wall
A pink castle and some fairy wings
My eyes tear up when I see my old doll

A tea set and a crown catch my eye
A pair of tiny baby shoes
Well worn overalls wave goodbye
The puppets or a witch hat? I can’t choose

Cars, and trains, and broomsticks that I made
A new board game that I wish I’d played
A tattered doll house window shade
My little girl life beginning to fade
