Maths: Onto surveys and graphs! (2009-2010)

We are thrilled with the results of your students final assessments on place value, number lines and exponents. Thank you for your support in helping them with the study guide.  Ask your kiddo what they've learned and how they did overall.  As review throughout the year, would you ask your son or daughter to practice rounding?  We encourage you to use the handy dandy opportunity of readily available numbers on license plates while driving.  Try, "Hey, the Washington plate in front of us is O93 WPD, could you round the number to the nearest hundred?  How about the nearest ten?"  Also, any large number your child should be quite capable of saying correctly aloud.  Being able to say them reinforces place value understanding and helps eliminate their fear of big numbers, which is essential to their comprehension and comfort in math.

Who knew how relevant understanding what a trillion is, would be to their lives and our current economy?

Next off, we are studying surveys and graphs.  Kids have been using survey tools in technology to track the books they read in fourth grade.  In homeroom we are exploring different types of graphs, how to design surveys and questions, how to collect, record, organize, present and analyze data.  Again, any chance you have to share your ideas or examples, please do.  It is so important to prove how math is integrated into everyday life.
