From my first look at Delia several weeks ago, my perspective has greatly changed since then. At first I thought that Delia was just a bunch of cool artists who hang around, make what they want and then sell it. It seemed fairly simple. As it turns out though, there’s much more to it, though they do hang around quite a bit. Delia is a business, and while the workers there are great artists, their main goal is to be successful, make money, and support themselves or their families. This means that the artists rarely get to make something that they really want to create. It’s not about what they artist wants, but about what the market wants and what sells. Many times I will comment on a piece in the shop, and the maker will shrug and say "it sells", but you can see the lack of enthusiasm towards some of the stuff they make. Most of the things that Delia makes our wine holders, tables, and garden odds and ends. My goal in the beginning was to create something cool out of metal that I could put in my room or give to my mom. Now though, after getting a better idea of what Delia really is and does, I think a much more practical, and cooler goal would be to create something that could be sold in the gallery or appeal to a wide range of customers. In this sense, I would be doing what the other artists do at Delia, create something that sells, has cheap materials, and a low construction time to maximize efficiency. In many ways that’s much more difficult than building something just for oneself.

re: what to make
what ever you make do it for love, beauty, and by all means, make it for mom - that's my vote!
and BTW
I'm in the market for an outdoor coffee table? do they make such an item in a soulful manner (versus a "shrug, it sells" manner?)
Don't sell out!!
Although I like your "get with the program" spirit here, it disheartens me to hear you shift from wanting to create work that will satisfy a personal yen, to creating something that will have market-appeal. Perhaps there's a place wherein the twain can meet?
I think I over did it
I think I overplayed the marketing aspect of the work created. Of course all the workers enjoy what they do and create what they want to create when they can. They do however have to make things that sell well and build what people order from their catalogue. its what it is. And yes Nance, they make some beautiful outdoor coffee tables. If i had more time, i'd make one for you!
Sounds hard stick with it
Hey dude sounds like you are having a good time and a hard one also. I understand going with the whole making money idea but dont forget the fun of the work. It seems some of the artists might have lost the reason why they started into this line of work. BTW police tip 101: make sure to lock up the metal shop. Metal theft is on the rise!
Good luck and i hope you learn how to weld. I am envious of you! i have always wanted to learn! Maybe a video of you making something might be cool!
Stick with it dude! I may pay you a visit since you aren't that far away.
