The Final Countdown

Today is the last day of senior projects ever.  What have I spent the day doing?  I have been analyzing the data I collected and discovering success rates for certain surgeries.  The percentages I calculated are probably not very accurate, however, because I only analyzed 43 patients total.  36 of them had trabeculectomies and only 7 of them had tube surgeries.  From the numbers I worked with, trabeculectomies had a 66.67% success rate, 13.89% qualified success rate, and a 19.44% rate of failure.  The tube surgeries have a a 57.14% qualified success rate, a 42.86% rate of failure, and no complete successes (keep in mind there are only 7 patients in this part).  If you are confused about what qualified successes are, look back at my previous blogs.  I go over what they are there.  So now my project is done, and it is time to move on to other things.  Unfortunately I did not get to see surgery, but Dr. Mansberger gave me the opportunity to go in later during the summer.  I also did not get to work with Dr. Shen again, but I hope he finishes his research and that it proves valuble to the ophthalmology community.  This was a good experience, and now I know what to expect while working in a research position.  I feel like this isn't the kind of thing I would like to do as a career, but it was definitely good to see what it was like.
