"I prefer naming cows nonhuman names, like Jamaica or Sunflower"
Had an interview yesterday with a kid from FGHS, he's in 4H and FFA and his family owns "a dairy" (isn't it a dairy farm? not just a dairy?)
When I walked up his friend said "Dude, you have an interview? Unfair!"
It was an ok interview, he seemed like he didn't know what to say. I've decided against filming, because I realize that I don't want people putting on a front for a camera, so I am just going to stick with my ever so faithful iPod recorder, and go from there.
I sent Christian my notes/ article so far and he really liked it a lot. I still haven't heard back from Chris Bagg, and if he by some miracle or another ends up reading this blog entry, then he should know that he should really get on that, since his help would be much appreciated :P.
Otherwise this has been an insanely fun job. I think it's one of the more free senior projects out there, I get to dictate my own schedule and I actually get to go out there and do something productive instead of doing office work or something mundane like that. My days are usually pretty action packed, for example, yesterday I did my interview and then I walked around the school for half an hour. Today I've sat around the office waiting for Christian to arrive, and typing up my notes from yesterday. Exciting!!!
Ok, bad example.
I've spent most of my time so far tracking down the name of this one girl who got pregnant last year put the baby up for adoption and then turned around and got pregnant again this year, and then dropped out. She plans to keep baby #2, and I think that would make one heck of a good story!!! I spent one whole day finding out her name, and another 2 days finding someone who knew her. Yesterday I gave my name and phone number to one of her friends and told her to text the girl and tell her that I wanted to interview her for the paper.
The administration found out I was tracking down the dropout/ teen mother and they were very unhappy about it. Jon O'Neill the principal got all pouty and said "she's not part of the class anymore, why would you want to interview her?" I do feel bad for him, but I'm not trying to make the school look bad, it's just I want the best story I can possibly get.
Anyway, race seems like an issue at the school. Supposedly there's some gang stuff, but I haven't been able to track too much down, I don't think I really want to. I talked to a guy that my friends referred to as a-wanna-be-gangsta on tuesday and he talked about how the white people always start the fights but the hispanics finish them. When I asked him if he knew the dropout/ pregnant girl (I've made it a habit to ask everyone I meet) he said no he doesn't talk to white people. He says the white people at the school don't respect the hispanic people, and when I asked him if anyone else shared that viewpoint he said that he didn't give out names, because he wanted to "protect" his "people." I couldn't sense anything too violent at the school, but maybe I was wrong.
Today I'm going to ask him if he knew I was a reporter on Tuesday, because if he did than I can talk about the things that he said to me. I wonder if I should though, I feel like that's cheating, and like it might make him angry. Wanna-be-gangsta or not, I don't really want him getting angry with me.
Anyway, my noble bike steed has arrived. I shall depart now. And possibly write later if today ends up being interesting.

Your project seems to have the stuff of a good novel
I am reading your most recent post first, having skipped the initial description, and I am intrigued! I'll poke C. Bagg in the ribs if I run into him; sounds like you have lots of information to share and many potential paths to follow. Enjoy!
