Day numero 10

So I skipped a few days. Mostly due to time concerns, but I will try to keep you all caught up.

Today is my third time of four days at the new set.  This set is located between 70th and 71st and NE Ocean Ave.  It's a two house scene where the mother and her family in the movie and the ex-marine both live next to each other.  In other words, another house scene, and many of the shots were external.  What does this mean? It means a lot more standing in one place, it means locking up a set a block away for a long time.  While it's easy to understand why this is necessary, it's hard to fight the boredom at times.  I take trips to Craft, the snack bus, or keep myself busy by trying to find work, or at least moving around to keep the blood pumping.  I'm not necessarily saying that the work is bad, in fact I'm still learning quite a bit, but it's much harder for me to stand boredom than to work hard.  In other words, there were times when I wished I was running back and forth getting breakfast orders.  It didn't help that most everyone else was busy, since it meant less people to talk to.

Although, at one point Jason, the AD, told me about how he got into the business.  It turns out, once again, it's all about connections.  The first job he got was actually on the set of The Breakup.  After working that gig and making a good relationship with the AD's there, he was soon called back and rehired for other movies.  After a few years of PA work, a friend asked him to work as an AD for him.  Because of the way PA's evolve, much of it was not too much of a change or shock, but it was still somewhat of a responsibility leap.  I'd get into more details but I'm tired.

Because of the slow day today, and despite track ending, I left at about 1:30pm because they did not really need my work at that time, and I had more productive things to do at home.

Today was experience in work as usual, in gritting through the boring stuff while still staying on task, focused, and alert.

 

I know I'm posting this blog on the wrong day, but todays was a long one and I wanted to catch up... so I'll post my big blog tomorrow morning since I'm going in for a night shoot then, meaning I won't start work until 3:00pm (But I won't finish until about 5:00am or so)... It'll make being right by the Burnside bridge much more interesting, that's for sure...

Keep on truckin'

I was so impressed to see you on set the other morning, running about with your official headset and walkie-talkie. What a scene - for those of you who couldn't witness it in person, imagine people walking or running briskly between Naito Parkway, Ash Street, (and the related number blocks) with flights of coffee, tripods, light gear, etc. It all looks like business as usual, it's so quiet you'd never guess the scale of what might be going on in a singular space (say in the lobby of Berbatti's.) given there were easily 200 + people milling around.

Ian, you and I discussed a few things that might be interesting for your readers to know about some observations you shared - for one, how the communication system can be a challenge with your hearing and also your observations about gender within the crew.

And, finally, I'd love to hear your reflections on whether it's helpful to wait for an order or to do something proactive, of your own volition. Do you sense that there are some PAs who become overzealous or lackadaisical in their jobs? How does that play out in terms of the crew hierarchy? Does that make sense?
