1. Your name: Jesse Kimsey-Bennett

2. Name of faculty advisor for your project (not necessarily your C & C advisor):
Erin Goodling

3. Name of your C and C Advisor: Nance Leonhardt

4. Title and Summary of Your Project: Give a descriptive title and a concise summary of your project plan.

“An Architect’s Dirty Work.” I don’t mean coal mining or janitor work, I just mean the less glamorous activities of an architect. I will spend my weekdays with Nathan Hamilton at Allied Works, learning about what he does on a daily basis. This could include, calculating costs, rendering computer models, constructing 3-D samples, and researching other buildings.

5. Statement of purpose: What is the object or purpose of your project? What do you hope to accomplish? What do you hope to learn?

Architecture is such a glamorous career in the minds of many; I hope to discover the more routine responsibilities that come with being an architect. I also want to use this time to find out if architecture might is a suitable career for myself.

6. Statement of interest: Why are you interested in this topic? Do you already know something about it? What and how?

I am interested in graphic design and I tend to achieve well in math. So architecture has always seemed like a fitting career. I have always been interested in modern architecture, so this would also be a great way to learn what building structures actually requires today.

7. Who will be your on-site mentor in this project? How did you choose this person?
What agreements have you made with this mentor about his/her role? Please provide contact information for your mentor.

Mentor's Name and Title: Nathan Hamilton Architect

            Mentor's Phone Number: (503) 227-6509

            Mentor's Email Address: NathanH@alliedworks.com

8. What is your understanding about your actual work? What will you do? How much control will you have about what you do? With whom will you be spending your time? What will be your regular hours?

From what I have learned, architects occasionally meet with clients, but generally they work behind a desk like most people. They spend their time meticulously perfecting their designs. I would hopefully be helping my mentor Nathan Hamilton with this part of the process. As of now, I would be working until 3, starting at 8 or 9.

9. Please give the street address of the location of your senior project (where you will be spending the majority of your time): 1532 SW Morrison St. #2 Portland, OR 97205-1942

10. How do you intend to share your project with the Catlin community? You may either write and present a (substantial) paper, or create and present a (substantial) Powerpoint presentation about your experience.

I intend to make a Powerpoint presentation, with pictures of work that I’ve helped with. Since I’m also into video, I may just make a video, with interviews.

11. What do you see as the potential difficulties of this project? What might prevent the project from being successful?  How can the committee and/or your project advisor support you?

I don’t think there will be many difficulties with my project. The only time I forsee trouble, is if Nathan must leave town. In which case, I would probably just shadow another architect at the firm. Also parking downtown is expensive. Will I be expected to pay for parking on my own?

12. Is your PE requirement complete? Yes

13. Is your community service requirement complete? Yes

14. Do you have any other obligations which might be affected by the project? Baseball.

P.S. Hooray!
