Out of the Frying Pan and into the Kiln

So far this week Walter and I have spent a lot of time thinking about the possible new project using salvaged wood from the Portland area.  Yesterday we met with Donald from Urban Timber Works, a company that saves trees in Portland's urban environment from turning into firewood and transforms them into magnificent pieces of art and furniture.  Donald showed Walter and me some pictures of his work so that Walter will be able to have some visual aids for when he presents his idea to the judging committee.  He and I have picked up a whole new vocabulary used when talking a

The past couple of days have been very exciting.  I am beginning to become more familiar with how the studio is layed out and where all of the equipment we use belongs.  Yesterday we began the day by driving to Colombia Art and grabbing another ten foot piece of foam core.  When we got back to the studio we built another template of the glass counter we were beginning, an exact replica of the one we had made at his client's house.  We made this to give to the cabinet makers to make sure we all were using the same numbers and measurements.  We do not want to make any

My first few days as a glass artist have gone well.  Last thursday  Walter Gordinier, the artist who I am shadowing, sent me an email and told me that there would not be any work for me to come help with until Monday, so I had a three day weekend.
