Building the Chair (Friday)

posted in

It's chair building time. First thing in the morning I tried to help Jeff use his email to send an estimate for a gutter project to a client. I love the guy, but he's worse than my grandma on the computer. We then headed over to Home Depot to pick up some roof tiles for a little old lady (95+) that Jeff does house work for. Then it was back to Jeff's/the shop and time to get crankin on the adirondack chairs. We had pretty much all the pieces cut for two chairs except for the slats that make up the back and that make up the seat.

Trim

posted in

Today we worked on trim for all the doors in the extension of the North Portland house. I got to use the big chop saw (tool of the day yesterday) as well as a table saw and nail gun. At first Mychal and Esteban just had me sand the edge of a window in the master bedroom. The ceiling is entirely wooden boards and they said that when I was done with the window I had to sand the whole ceiling. This is another example of one of the times when I thought they were being serious, but were really joking around.

IKEA and Stuff

Today I went straight to North Portland in the morning. Much easier drive than to Beaverton from my house. When I got there the architect Hiromi Ogawa (I think), Ian the home owner, and Jeff were wandering around and talking about the project. Mychal and Esteban in the other room were complaining about how much noise they were making and joked with me about how we needed ear plugs to block out the jabber. Interesting dynamic. The newly laid floor needed to be covered with this heavy brown paper to protect it while we did the trim (i.e. "trimmed out") the whole extension.

More Driving and the Anirondacks

Today started out with office work. I joined Walt and Jeff in the office at 8:00 and Jeff set me to the task of figuring out how to get LBC registered as contractors in Washington state for a job they plan to do in Vancouver. I printed out the forms I found on the Washington Dept. of Labor and Industries and I called the Secretary of State's office to try and find a company that can serve as a registered agent for LBC in Washington. Lots of bureaucracy.

Hardware

Today was maybe the most enjoyable work day I've had during this project. I showed up to Jeff's house at 8:00 and helped Jeff load some stuff into a van. Then I carivaned with Walt to American Tires in Tigard so he could drop off his van to get its tires replaced. I then dropped Walt off back at Jeff's and drove myself to Michael's, whose name I believed is actually spelled Mychal. So Michael is Mychal from now on. The appraiser from the bank is coming by Mychal's newly remodeled house to appraise it tomorrow, so we worked on finishing details.

Driving with Jeff and Walt

Today was a slow day for Lorence Brother's Construction. I got to Jeff's house in the morning and had a cup of coffee with the brothers in Jeff's living room. Then we went out to the shop and cleaned out/organized the "van" (truck). In the shop was a bunch of trim for the house that I worked on on my first day. So we loaded it up into the van to be taken over. But before we delivered that trim we drove to a job that the brothers had done in Beaverton off of Walker rd.

Prepping for Paint

posted in

Today was less eventful. We were back at Michael's house, and first thing when I got there I organized some left over wood in the garage. Meanwhile Michael went out to Home Depot and purchased some plastic and tape, which would be my equipment for the day. They're painting Michael's house this weekend, and so I had to prep all of the windows. Although Michael's house is only one story and the guy in the picture is painting not prepping, you can still see the windows covered in plastic in the picture below. This was my task.

Michael's House and a Drive to the Dump

As I have been told at least 7 times in the last few weeks, I've really started working at a bad time. Apparently the Lorence Brothers Construction Company has been swamped with work for the last four or five years, and now they've just finished several projects and are in a bit of a lull. Driving with Jeff today, I asked him if the economy's downturn had effected their business. He hesitated then explained that back in 2008 they had less work for awhile, but then they got going again.
